New Carolina Panthers Logo

New Carolina Panthers Logo

The Carolina Panthers unveiled a new logo last weekend, and it appears the timing was due to the new logo being leaked by Nike’s Facebook page early. Nike, which is taking over for Reebok as the NFL’s uniform provider starting next season, was unveiling some new gloves they’ve made for teams on their Facebook page, and showed this image of their Panthers gloves before the new logo had been announced. The Internet caught wind of this, and the Panthers announced their new logo shortly thereafter.

The Panthers were an expansion team in 1995, and this is their first redesign. The original logo had already become pretty dated, particularly the wordmark. I’m no illustrator, so when I first saw the new logo on Nike’s gloves, I thought it was an improvement, but I didn’t realize how much of one it was. Once I saw them side-by-side, I realized how flat the original was. The new panther has much more dimension. The logo that was unveiled is slightly different than what was on the gloves – the gloves’ logo had black whiskers on the right. I do like the mark better with the white stroke that appears when it’s used on a dark color.

The wordmark is the biggest improvement. The old Baywatch font had to go. The new one is pretty good. Not the most exciting thing in the world, but with sports, the wordmark is definitely secondary. It has an exciting feel, and I like the whiskers (/scratch marks) in the type. And losing the 90s drop shadow is always a good thing.

Overall, a definite improvement, continuing the NFL’s trend of having the best design in sports. I only hope this means they’ll be getting new uniforms, because they’re some of my least favorite in the league.

What do you think of the Panthers’ new logo? And don’t feel bad if you couldn’t tell there was a change before seeing them side-by-side – most people couldn’t.

It appears a very similar approach that the lions took a few seasons ago, with a more aggressive, bolder look and feel with their line stroke. It amazing what a big impact such a few tweaks in stroke will do to a logo design. I appreciate the new font selection as well, as this will lend itself better on other mediums. You can say aggressive and bold without having brush stroke type lettering that they previously used.

To each their own I guess. I’ve always been a fan of the crazy baywatch script. It gave them something unique.

it is indeed better than their old logo, but i feel like if your team is going to go through rebranding, when you’re done you should probably have a brand that is at least among the top half as far as best brands/logos in the league. to me, the panthers are still not there.
